Meghan Markle’s explosive Oprah interview sets the Royal Family in motion
In an eerie echo of Princess Diana who graced our TV screens 26 years ago in 1995 with a strikingly similar story, Meghan Markle went public this month with her side of this royal nightmare.
The US citizen turned British royal had been a celebrity actor in her former life on the US side of the pond, yet a fate meeting with the young prince changed the course of her life forever. In the interview with Oprah she explains how she went into the relationship naively, and didn’t do any research before getting involved with the royals.
In one anecdote she even describes having to learn to courtesy very abruptly in a car park just before a spontaneous first introduction to her new boyfriend’s grandma. After remarking to the fever of the occasion she says Harry returned the comment: “Well she is still the Queen.”
The actress has received great backlash online from new sites looking to debunk her claims in the interview, but harsh treatment from the press is something she’s used to. Indeed, it was shocking for viewers to be shown the difference in headlines comparing the press coverage of Kate Middleton’s and Meghan Markle’s respective pregnancies. In one juxtaposition Kate is applauded for her gentle stance cradling her bump, whilst a different article condemns Meghan for drawing too much attention to her pregnancy. It seems, as usual, women can never win in the eyes of the press.
Following the interview Buckingham Palace have refuted Meghan’s claims, with some palace staff even making counter claims of poor treatment and abuse from Meghan whilst she was living in the royal grounds. The palace has however said that it will consider appointing a new diversity chief following the comments from Meghan during the interview in regards to the colour of her future child’s skin.
